FREE CASE STUDY: Humber River Water Levels Time Series Box Plot Data Analysis

Dataset:

Daily Water Level Data for HUMBER RIVER AT WESTON (02HC003) [ON] in Toronto, Ontario, CANADA was analyzed in a Time Series Box Plot Data Analysis Excel template. The attached box & whisker plot outlier data analysis case study for you to download is output from running 17 years of daily Humber River water level (metres) readings through a time series outlier and anomaly detection box plot data analysis template algorithm: the outlier and anomaly detection template applies the statistical theory of the box & whisker plot.

Key Finding:

There are four distinct patterns of Humber River water level readings based on data from 2002-2019 (inclusive). One pattern indicates certain days in March when Humber River water level readings at the Humber River at Weston (02H003) reading station were statistically, unusually high.

Instructions:

Download the free CASE STUDY: Humber River Water Levels Time Series Box Plot Data Analysis outlier and anomaly detection document. The outliers case study is free when you order. Complete these steps after downloading the outlier and anomaly detection case study:

1. Create a box plot graph or line chart using Column Z as your segment (legend) values and columns B-M as the time series (x-axis) values to view four distinct time series patterns that were discovered in this dataset. Make creating your time series box plot graph easier by copying and pasting Column Z before columns B-M.

2. You will notice that March (the grey box plot bars in the store image) is the month in which water levels are unusually high for one of the time series segments.

3. The box and whisker plot graph image indicates unusually high (statistical outliers or anomalies) Humber River water level readings in each month for all of the four time series segments discovered by the time series boxplot algorithm outlier and anomaly detection template.

4. Unusually high Humber River water level readings are flagged yellow as "High Outlier" in columns N-Y of the 'Data' tab in the outlier and anomaly detection template worksheet.

Notes:

- Columns A-M in the 'Data' tab in this outlier and anomaly detection template workbook is a dataset summarizing Humber River water level readings (in metres, not feet) for every day between 2002 and 2019, inclusive.

- Columns N-Z in the 'Data' tab is data are created by the outlier and anomaly detection template algorithm after running Columns B-M of the Humber River water levels dataset through the Time Series Outlier Box Plot Analysis template.

- Column Z is a segment variable summarizing four different time series patterns of Humber River daily water levels (in metres) between 2002 and 2019, inclusive that were discovered by the outliers and anomaly detection template.
